10 Phrasal Verbs with GET
1. GET BY:
It’s very hard to get by on this salary.
We are going to use this phrasal verb with get in a situation where there’s lack of something or where the amount of something is not enough or ideal.
Get by is often used with the prepositions on or with.
2. get over:
She finally got over her breakup.
We use the phrasal verb get over when we are able to overcome a difficult situation whether it’s emotionally, or physically. For example:
You can get over an ex- (or a breakup as in the previous example)
You can also get over the flu (this example is physical)
3. GET OUT OF
A lot of young people are trying to get out of debt these days.
We are going to use this phrasal verb with get when we want to leave an unwanted situation or we want to stop a habit or routine that it may no longer serve us.

I need to get out of the habit of waking up so late.
Get out of here
We are asking this person to leave the room.

4. get away with
I wish I could get away with going to classes only. But learning a second language requires a lot more than that.
Basically get away with means to avoid doing something and still succeed at the end goal, which in the case of the example is to learn a second language.
Power tip: after prepositions the verb always goes with -ing.
5. get at
She keeps getting at me. She doesn’t like anything I say or do.
This phrasal verb with get might not be so transparent. We can say it’s a synonym of criticize.
6. GET AHEAD
After so many years of hard work and training, we were able to get ahead in our professions.
The meaning of this phrasal verb is to be successful especially in your job, career and society.
7. GET ALONG.
It’s so nice when we can all get along.
Get along means to have a good relationship. It’s quite similar to get on well with.
8. GET AROUND
I want to buy a new bike. It’s the cheapest way to get around.
Get around has different meanings. In the example, it means to travel. But it can also mean to move or find the time to do something as in these examples:
As you grow older, it gets more difficult to get around on your own.
It’s kind of hard to get around to finishing all this laundry.
9. get behind
I got behind with my homework the last few weeks so now I have plenty of things to do.
Get behind means to fail to do as much work or fail to pay an amount of money you were supposed to.
10. get back to sth/sb
When you get out of your gym routine, it can be really hard to get back at it again.
Get back at something means to start again.
